As one of 27 Nord Anglia pilot schools, The British International School (BIS) Abu Dhabi is proud to participate in a groundbreaking study led by Boston College, exploring how metacognition enhances student learning. This research focuses on helping students understand how they learn best, fostering independence, adaptability, and critical thinking - key skills for success in an evolving world.

Early findings from the two-year study, conducted in collaboration with Harvard’s Project Zero, show remarkable results: 84% of students report a better understanding of their learning process, while 75% feel more independent in their studies. At BIS Abu Dhabi, metacognitive strategies have been embedded across subjects, with teachers using Harvard’s Thinking Routines to enhance reflection, creativity, and collaboration in the classroom.

BIS Abu Dhabi’s involvement in this global initiative underscores its commitment to educational excellence. Principal Alan Cocker remarked, “Partnering in this research allows us to refine our teaching methods, ensuring our students develop the skills they need to thrive.” As metacognitive practices continue to transform learning, BIS Abu Dhabi remains at the forefront of innovation, preparing students not just for exams, but for lifelong success.

The British International School (BIS) Abu Dhabi is an outstanding-rated school for students aged 3-18, offering a blend of English and international curricula, including the English National Curriculum, IGCSE, IB Diploma Programme (IBDP), and BTEC International Level 3 Extended Diploma.
